Overview
International students can improve their chances of obtaining a PR by preparing in advance. Learning how to get PR will help you achieve your Canadian immigration goals. Proactively preparing increases your competitiveness in Canada’s PR process.
More than 100 economic immigration pathways exist in Canada. Many of these paths favour Canadian-educated candidates. Research by the Canadian government shows that Canadian education leads to success in the labour market.
Employers in Canada value the education and work experience international students gain here. International students who are motivated, multilingual, and have global experience, making them competitive in the Canadian labour market.
After your studies, you must get work experience in the National Occupational Classification (NOC) skill level that matches the skilled worker immigration pathways you’re interested in.
Most international students who study in Canada apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) after they finish their studies. The PGWP gives international students an open work permit, which lets them work for any company and in any job they want. The duration of the PGWP is equal to the duration of your studies in Canada, up to a maximum of three years.
One of the main advantages of the PGWP is that it allows you to gain Canadian work experience, which can help you become a more competitive candidate for Canadian immigration.
Many Canadian immigration paths reward candidates who have worked in Canada. If you haven’t started your studies in Canada yet, you need to sign up for a program at a Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI) that will make you eligible for a PGWP.
Next, research Canadian immigration pathways to determine which options may be best for you. It’s best to do this research as soon as possible so you can make sure you take the steps you need to take to be eligible for these options and make your application stronger.
Each PR path has its own set of requirements, but in general, you will be judged on how well you speak English and/or French, how much you have learned, and how much work experience you have.
You may also have an advantage if you have an eligible job offer and ties to the province or territory where you live. You might want to take advantage of the free CVIS Immigration assessment to see if you are eligible for Canadian permanent residence.
Following are common pathway options for students Contact CVIS IMMIGRATION TEAM for Assistance
Express Entry
Express Entry is a system for managing applications for three federal skilled worker immigration programs:
• Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)
• Canadian Experience (CEC)
• Federal Skilled Trades (FST)
International students with at least one year of Canadian work experience may find the CEC to be a good fit for their PR studies. If you already have at least one year of professional work experience from another country, you may want to look into the FSWP.
To be eligible for Express Entry, you must meet the eligibility requirements of at least one of these three programs. You can then create a profile on the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada website (IRCC).
The top scorers will be invited to apply for permanent residency. Candidates are assigned CRS scores based on human capital criteria such as age, education, language skills, and work experience, among other things. Candidates can earn extra points for studying in Canada and working in Canada. As a result, international students are well placed to compete under Express Entry.
IRCC sends invitations to apply for permanent residence to Express Entry candidates with the highest CRS scores every two weeks. Those who have been invited have 60 days to complete and submit their permanent residence applications to IRCC.
Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
Another popular PR route for international students is the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). The PNP is used in nearly all the provinces and territories in Canada. The PNP is available to skilled workers seeking permanent residence in a specific province or territory. Many PNP streams give preference to applicants who have studied and worked in Canada. There are also streams designed specifically for international students. View the CVIS IMMIGRATION PNP Finder to learn more.
Quebec
The French-speaking province of Quebec has its own immigration system, with the goal of welcoming skilled francophone workers. Quebec also favours candidates with provincial education and work experience. The Quebec Experience Program is one such example.
Possible Alternative Routes for Economic Class PR
There are over a hundred different economic class avenues open to international student candidates in Canada. Some examples are:
• Atlantic Immigration Program: Students with academic credentials from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, or Newfoundland and Labrador may apply.
• Hong Kong: Hong Kong students who complete their studies in Canada are eligible to apply for permanent residency in Canada.
• Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot: Students from outside Canada who attend schools in rural and northern communities across the country can apply for permanent residency through this program.
NOC skill level verification
If you want to immigrate to Canada as a skilled worker, you’ll need to meet the requirements for the specific programs you’re interested in. If you’re planning to work in Canada after finishing your degree, you should make sure that the job you’re applying for has a National Occupational Classification (NOC) skill level that matches the requirements of the skilled worker immigration programs to which you’re applying. High-skilled work experience is typically required for entry into most skilled worker programs.
However, those with “intermediate” or “lower” skilled work experience can apply for permanent residence through specialized federal and provincial “skilled worker pathways.”.
Family class
Sponsoring immediate family members for permanent residency in Canada is a perk of being a citizen or permanent resident of Canada. For instance, if your spouse or common-law partner is a Canadian citizen or PR, they may be able to sponsor you if the two of you meet the Canadian government’s eligibility criteria.
