Canadian Minister of Citizenship

Canadian Minister of Citizenship

Since Canada was founded, it has had a federal minister in charge of immigration for a long time. Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship is their current job title. When it comes to immigration in Canada, the minister in charge has a great deal of influence.

Minister of Immigration and Refugees – Role

The Canadian Minister of Citizenship is in charge of Canada’s Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Department.

• The mandate of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is to: Ease the process of immigration for foreign nationals, maximize their positive contributions to Canadian society, and keep Canadians safe.
• Safeguard those in need of humanitarian aid, including refugees
• Promote the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship while bolstering its core values.
• Embrace and encourage diversity.
• Promote international migration policies that aid Canada’s immigration goals
• The Department of Citizenship and Immigration Act spells out the roles and powers of IRCC and the immigration minister.
• The Minister of Citizenship and Immigration is also jointly responsible for the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act with the Minister of Public Safety (IRPA).

Canadian Minister of Citizenship responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Implementing the policy priorities outlined in the mandate letter given to IRCC by the Prime Minister of Canada.
• Contracting with the various Canadian provinces and territories to facilitate immigrant settlement
• Implementing Canada’s immigration policy goals via international agreements
• Offering a yearly report and a strategy for adjusting immigration levels to the Canadian government
• Managing the Refugee and Immigration Board (IRB). As a fair administrative body, it is the IRB’s job to make decisions about immigration and refugees based on strong evidence.
• Administration of Canada’s Passport and Citizenship Programs
• Decision-making regarding immigration in unusual cases

Role of Canada’s Canadian Minister of Citizenship and Why We Need One

Because immigration is so vital to Canada’s economy and culture, the country has appointed a minister to oversee immigration for the majority of its existence.

Canada was a relatively unpopulated country with plenty of space to expand when it was established in 1867. The country’s economic growth and security at the time required the help of immigrants. Canada’s population has grown substantially, but the country still struggles to meet its basic needs due to its ageing population. Canada has one of the lowest birth rates and oldest populations. It is hoped that a large influx of immigrants will help boost its population, workforce, and economy.
Immigration is encouraged in Canada for both economic and social reasons. For Canada, a strong family is the cornerstone of a strong society, which is why the country makes it easy for separated families to reunite. Since helping those in need is central to Canadian culture, the country also opens its doors to refugees and other migrants seeking asylum.

Consequently, Canada’s immigration policy goals can only be maintained with the help of an immigration minister. Every year, IRCC and the immigration minister are responsible for facilitating the entry of hundreds of thousands of temporary foreign workers, international students, and visitors, in addition to the more than 400,000 new immigrants. Each year, they deal with hundreds of thousands of applications for Canadian citizenship. The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and the immigration minister are becoming increasingly influential in setting policy and guiding Canada’s economic and social development.

Sean Fraser, the current Canadian Minister of Citizenship

On October 26, 2021, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed Sean Fraser as Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship. He is the new Minister of Public Safety after Marco Mendicino’s promotion to that position.
As of 2015, Minister Fraser has served as a member of Parliament for Central Nova. The Central Nova riding encompasses a wide range of municipalities, including a small piece of Halifax, the provincial capital and largest city.
In both the 2019 and 2021 federal elections, Minister Fraser was re-elected to his position.
Minister Fraser was an attorney who specialized in commercial litigation and international dispute resolution before he entered politics.
The Hon. John Fraser, Minister of Justice, received his J.D. from Dalhousie University, his M.A. from Leiden University in the Netherlands, and his B.S. from St. Francis Xavier University.
Prime Minister Fraser was raised in that province. He has a wife and two kids.
