Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is the name of the federal agency in Canada tasked with facilitating immigration, defending refugees, and helping newcomers settle.

Citizenship, travel documents (such as passports), and multiculturalism are also services provided by IRCC.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) – Overview

Formerly known as Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), IRCC rebranded in 2012. It wasn’t long after the election of a new Canadian government in November 2015 that the department began using its new name. The Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship oversees the department.

Even though the abbreviation “CIC” is still used in some situations, the acronym “IRCC” has been used more and more in official publications and communications since the current government took office.

Canada’s increased emphasis on refugee and humanitarian immigration is reflected in the official name of the government department, which now includes the word “refugees.” But the government has told people that Canada’s immigration policy will continue to be friendly to skilled workers and their families. There is no evidence that the current administration puts less emphasis on economic immigration or family reunification than its predecessors. In fact, the government has promised to give IRCC more money to improve program delivery and processing times.

Individuals and stakeholders should be aware that CIC and IRCC are not two separate agencies. Even though they may be used in different places, CIC and IRCC are both names for the same organization. In reality, IRCC is not a brand-new agency, but rather the natural successor to CIC, a department that has been around for quite some time, albeit with a slightly revised mandate and a new name. One group that might keep using the CIC name for a long time is the provincial and territorial governments of Canada.

Canada Immigration

Canada’s efforts to create and sustain a policy of welcoming newcomers that benefits both Canadians and newcomers are what the “Immigration” part of the department’s name alludes to. Due to Canada’s historically open and progressive immigration policy, most Canadians can find out where their ancestors came from in just a few generations. Given that Canada’s population is getting older and that the country wants strong economic growth and safety, immigration is likely to remain a key part of the country’s growth.

Refugees

The section of IRCC titled “Refugees” is a reflection of two main factors. To begin, an increasing number of people around the world have been forced to flee their homes due to violence and political unrest in recent years. These people and their families have been uprooted from their homes and are in precarious positions because of it. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees reports that as of June 2015, the world has 60 million refugees.

The second thing to think about is how quickly and with care the current administration has dealt with this problem. As part of the Liberal Party’s platform for the 2015 Canadian federal election, Trudeau and other well-known Liberal Party members said that the best thing for Canada and international refugees would be to let more refugees live in the country and give them more resources.

Citizenship Canada

For those who make the life-altering decision to relocate to Canada, the policy’s defining feature is the ease with which they can apply for Canadian citizenship. An emotional and humbling turning point in the life of a new Canadian citizen is the moment they are welcomed into the Canadian family.

Despite the department’s name change, citizenship is still a major focus for IRCC.
