Parents and Grandparents Super Visa

Parents and Grandparents Super Visa

Parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents are eligible for a Super Visa that will allow them to visit the country for up to five years (as of July 4, 2022).

The Canadian government allows extended visits from parents and grandparents. A Super Visa’s validity period can be extended for up to ten years.

How do parents and grandparents qualify for the “Super Visa?”

For eligible parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents, the Super Visa will allow visits to Canada for up to five years without the need for renewal beginning on July 4, 2022. Those who have a valid Super Visa can apply for an additional stay of up to seven years in Canada as a visitor. Super Visa holders, such as parents and grandparents, can re-enter Canada multiple times within a 10-year period. The Super Visa policy used to permit stays in Canada of up to two years prior to July 4, 2022.

Minimum income requirements are in place for the Super Visa, just as they are for the Parents and Grandparents Program, which is open all year.

For parents and grandparents from countries where visitors need a TRV to enter Canada, the Super Visa is the best option. Those who are granted the Super Visa will be able to freely travel back and forth between Canada and their home country without having to constantly reapply for a Temporary Resident Visa.

Anyone who wants to visit Canada can apply for a TRV, even if they don’t need one. However, upon initial entry, they will be given a letter of authorization from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that will allow them to stay in the country for up to two years.

Who Qualifies for a Super Visa Application?

Family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents, such as parents or grandparents, may be able to apply for the Super Visa. The applicants must not pose a security risk or health risk to Canada, and they may be required to meet additional requirements stipulated by the visa office through which they are applying.

You cannot include any family members or other individuals who rely on you in this application. The Super Visa can only be applied for by immediate relatives (parents or grandparents) and their spouses or common-law partners.

In what ways can one apply for a “Super Visa?”

The application is completed in much the same way as a standard TRV. Yet more paperwork is needed to guarantee the safety of the parents and grandparents during their stay in Canada. There are a few things that must be met to fulfill this condition:

  • A personal invitation from your Canadian relative.
  • Records demonstrating that the family’s adjusted gross income is at or below the LICO threshold (see table below);
  • Documentation of the claimant’s paternity or grandparent age, such as a birth certificate listing the claimant as a parent; and Evidence of continuous coverage for at least a year by a Canadian health insurance provider.

Submit your application to the Canadian visa office that has jurisdiction over your current foreign residence. Additional paperwork may be required by the visa office.

Several criteria will be used to evaluate the application. The reason for the trip to Canada will be considered, as will whether the visitors’ family ties back home will remain strong enough. Proof of this can be provided by demonstrating the existence of links to the outside world (such as family, money, and other resources) that extend beyond the borders of Canada.

A medical exam is mandatory for all Super Visa applicants. After an application has been submitted to the visa office, the necessary forms and instructions will be provided.

When applying for a Super Visa, what must the sponsor meet to qualify?

If a child or grandchild wants to sponsor their parents or grandparents for a Super Visa, they’ll need to show that their family’s income is below a certain threshold (LICO). These items are admissible as evidence:

  • Recent tax documents (NOA or T4/T1), proof of EI payments, a letter of employment detailing salary and start date, and a copy of the employee’s passport are all required.
  • Bank statements or pay stubs.
