Post Graduate Work Permit

Post Graduate Work Permit

International students can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) after they graduate from a postsecondary school in Canada that is recognized by the government.
If you have a PGWP, you can take a job with any company in Canada. The work experience you’ve gained can then be used to strengthen your application for permanent residence in Canada.

Overview

Canada’s Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) is part of the country’s strategy to entice and keep foreign students in the country permanently. You can use your PGWP for up to three years (how long you can use it for depends on how long your education in Canada lasts).

Given that the PGWP is an open work permit, international graduates are free to accept employment with any company in Canada. The PGWP helps international students and recent graduates find meaningful employment in Canada. PGWP holders who have gained such work experience have an advantage when applying for permanent residence in Canada.

There are more than a hundred different Canadian immigration programs, and many of them give preference to people who have studied or worked in Canada.

Can I study abroad and still be eligible for a PGWP?

During the coronavirus pandemic, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has a special policy that lets international students do distance learning at a Canadian Designated Learning Institution and still get a PGWP if they meet all the other requirements.

DLIs are colleges and universities that have been given permission by the Canadian government to accept students from other countries.

Students from other countries who study online from abroad or who apply for a study permit by August 31, 2022, will still be able to finish up to 100% of their programme online without it affecting their PGWP eligibility.

But starting September 1, 2023, the length of an international student’s PGWP will be cut by the time they spent studying abroad. This is true no matter when they started their studies.

PGWP’s Prerequisites.

International students who want to get a Post-Graduation Work Permit must have:

• Completed an academic, vocational, or professional training programme at an eligible Designated Learning Institution (DLI) List that lasted at least eight months.
• The educational path chosen must ultimately result in a formally recognized credential.
• completed the program or programs of study listed on their post-graduation work permit application and maintained full-time student status in Canada throughout their entire time in those programs;
• have received a letter and transcript from the appropriate DLI verifying that the applicant has completed the program;
o A post-graduation work permit application is not complete without the transcript and official letter.
• Completion of:
o any government-funded school of higher education
o professional training institution
o a Quebec college or university; a Quebec private post-secondary institution that follows the same regulations as Quebec’s publicly funded institutions of higher education; any government-funded school of higher education
o professional training institution
o a Quebec college or university; a Quebec private post-secondary institution that follows the same regulations as Quebec’s publicly funded institutions of higher education;
o a private Quebec secondary or postsecondary institution offering a program of 900 hours or more leading to a DEP or an attestation de spécialisation professionnelle (ASP); or
o Canadian private institution with the legal authority to confer provincially recognized degrees (including Associate, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees) on students enrolled in degree-granting programs.

PGWP Validity

A PGWP can be used for anywhere from 8 months to 3 years. The exact duration is contingent upon the duration of your chosen program at a DLI in Canada. Here are some pointers from IRCC’s website:
• Initiated and Finished the Program in Eight Months or Less: Missing PGWP Eligibility
• If the program took 8 months or less and the maximum time allowed was 2 years, then the following applies: For as long as you are enrolled in school, the PGWP will be active (e.g., a 10-month program will result in a 10-month PGWP)
• If you have graduated from a program lasting at least two years: A PGWP’s term of service is set to last for three years.
• If you have completed more than one program in Canada, and both programs are at least 8 months long and qualify for the DLI, you may be eligible for a PGWP. The PGWP will be a total of the times stated above.

Limitation on Time to Apply for PGWP

Within 180 days (six months) of receiving a transcript and official letter from the eligible DLI verifying program completion, the applicant must apply for the Post-Graduation Work Permit.

Candidates have two options if their study permit is set to expire before they receive their grades:

• Request a visitor record to extend your stay in Canada.; or
• leaving Canada to apply for the PGWP.

Applicants must provide evidence that they meet one of three criteria laid out in paragraphs 188(1)(a) and (b) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations: (1) they are in possession of a valid study permit; (2) they previously held a study permit; or (3) they were authorized to study in Canada without a study permit.

I need to apply for the PGWP, but I don’t know what paperwork I need to submit.

At the time of application, applicants should have their DLI sent in a letter verifying that they have successfully completed the program of study, and they should have their DLI sent in an official transcript.
