International students are now temporarily permitted to work more than 20 hours a week during the school year in Canada.
As of November 15, 2022, until December 31, 2023, students will be permitted to work more than 20 hours per week, according to a recent announcement from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This is a one-time measure designed to address Canada’s labour deficit, particularly in industries where student workers have historically predominated, such as food services, retail, and hospitality. There are no limitations on the kind of job, though.
The new policy allows the 500,000 foreign students who are already studying in Canada to work extra hours.

Is it legal for me to work in Canada?
Many overseas students find themselves forced to work part-time during their studies in order to pay for the basics due to the high cost of tuition mixed with the cost of books, rent, food, and transportation.
The requirement for a work permit is not necessary for foreign students who enter Canada on a student visa. If registered to return to their studies the next semester, students may work off campus during a given academic semester. The number of hours a student can put in during a break from schools, such as the summer or winter vacation, is unrestricted.
If you have a valid study permit, are enrolled full-time in a recognized educational institution, have begun your studies and are maintaining satisfactory academic standing, as determined by your institution, are enrolled in an academic, vocational, or professional training program that is at least six months long and results in a degree, diploma, or certificate, and have a Social Insurance Number, you are eligible to work while you are studying in Canada (SIN).

Why is Canada in need of foreign students?
International students not only pay more in tuition than domestic students, but they also boost the country’s economy by consuming products and services. Additionally, the vast majority of foreign students decide to remain in Canada after graduation.
To fight a record labour shortfall and fill roughly one million job openings, Canada needs immigration. Canada has unveiled its Immigration Levels Plan 2023–2025, which aims to welcome 500,000 new permanent immigrants year by 2025 as a solution to the shortfall. Due to their work and study experience, as well as their high level of French or English language, foreign students are a useful resource since they have been found to integrate more rapidly into the Canadian labour market as economic immigrants.
In 2022, almost 400,000 study permits will be awarded.
IRCC awarded more than 452,000 study application permits between January and August 2022, and there is still a considerable demand for them, as seen by the most current backlog statistics. There are now 125,966 study permit applications in inventory, with another 34,000 requesting study permission extensions.
