Canadian Citizenship

To become a citizen of Canada, one must apply to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Pass a citizenship test and potentially participate in an interview.

Application Process

Once you’ve determined that you meet the prerequisites, you can review the following steps to apply for Canadian citizenship.

Application Submission

Submission of a completed application to the relevant IRCC office is required. A notice requesting the applicant take a citizenship test will be sent once their application has been verified.

Citizenship Test

Citizenship tests are administered to those between the ages of 18 and 54 and assess the applicant’s familiarity with Canadian history, geography, the political process, and the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship.

Citizenship applicants can obtain a free copy of A Look at Canada from IRCC.

There will be 20 total questions on the exam. Fifteen out of twenty is needed to pass. The average time to finish the exam is 30 minutes.

To take the test, candidates must bring their original immigration papers, passport, photo identification, and any other documents that prove their right to live permanently in Canada.

In addition, some applicants are required to attend an interview with a citizenship judge to prove their eligibility under the law. The average length of an interview is somewhere between 15 and 30 minutes.

There is no requirement for those under the age of 18 to take the exam.

Language Proficiency

Language proficiency in either English or French is also required of applicants aged 18 to 54. To demonstrate their linguistic competence, applicants must submit one of the following:

• Evidence of having reached Canadian Level Benchmark (CLB) 4 or higher in certain government language programs;
• Results from an approved third-party test; Secondary or post-secondary English or French transcripts or a diploma.

Citizenship Oath

To receive their citizenship certificate and become full-fledged Canadian citizens, those who have been approved must attend a citizenship ceremony.
