Electronic Travel Authorization

Would you like to visit Canada from a visa-free country? Wait a minute! When flying internationally, some people need an eTA, which stands for Electronic Travel Authorization.

This authorization is stored in a traveller’s passport electronically.

Anyone travelling to Canada will have their authorization extended for a shorter of five years or the expiration of their passport. If you have recently obtained a new passport, you will need to apply for a new eTA.

If you need a visa to enter Canada but already have a valid visa for that country, you do not need to apply for an eTA.

Why Would You Want an eTA?

It’s important to note that an eTA is required for the following four categories of travellers:

Those in Need of an eTA:

Visitors from countries that do not require visas
In the United States legally and indefinitely (a valid Green Card and a valid passport is needed)

Visitors Who Might Be Able to Get an eTA:

Visas are required for citizens of certain countries (instead of a visa)

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

For Visitors Who Are Unable to Use an eTA and Who Must Bring Additional Forms of Identification:

Citizens of Canada, both Canadian and non-Canadian (must carry a Canadian or US passport)
Canadian citizens and permanent residents (who are required to carry permanent resident documentation)

The Procedure for Making an Application

The application for an eTA can be completed in a matter of minutes, entirely online. Most eTA applications are approved instantly, while those that require additional documentation may take up to several days.
